Perhaps less of a “Producer 2 Watch” and more of a producer that deserves the listening ear of those who haven’t heard of him yet: Gramatik!
Gramatik, born in Slovenia, has been building his fanbase through online file sharing since the age of 13. After moving to the U.S., he landed a deal with the record label, Pretty Lights Music, which is a label that promotes most of their music by giving it away for free.
It is my belief that every great artist stands for something. Not only did his sleek combination of Rock and Electronica music capture my attention immediately, but his passion for making music without expectations of compensation. Gramatik is known for his philosophy of “freeing music by making music free.” His 2012 EP, #DigitalFreedom, was even dedicated to the fight against “severe internet censorship bills” like ACTA, SOPA, or PIPA, that would prevent file sharing and his ability to give his music away for free. Regardless of personal beliefs on the subject matter, I believe this is an incredible display of Gramatik’s character and passion for music.
Gramatik is geared up for a prosperous year as he tours the U.S. and promotes his latest EP, The Age Of Reason. Oh, and by the way, #TAOR is available for free download on his website, where you are also offered an opportunity to donate to his cause via PayPal or Bitcoin. Other songs to note on his SoundCloud are “Torture,” “Obviously,” and “Smoove Operator.”
