Boston Based rapper, Black EL, first caught my attention a few months back as he began gained notoriety across the hip-hop blogosphere via the release of a hand full of records from what we now know were songs to be included in his full length debut album, L_ST, that dropped earlier yesterday. With a steady release of quality content, I for one was excited to see what the young newcomer had to offer with his debut efforts.
Writing and recording one solid song is challenging, putting together an entire body of work is daunting, humbling, and respectable, regardless of the outcome. However, one solid song that leaves me wanting more (a feeling I got when initially listening to Black EL’s music), speaks louder than an array of music forcefully put together and released as a body of work that in the end can do more harm than good for the artist. After my initial listen of Black EL’s album, I’m left unfulfilled and disappointed. The records leaked prior to the release of the album were by far and away the stand out tracks, and should have been released as an EP rather than an album. Although the release of Black EL’s debut project wasn’t what I expected, he’s shown talent and potential. It will be interesting to see how he follows this up.
Here are some of the stand out tracks worth the listen, check out the album below, leave a comment and let me know what you think.
