Artist: Dante Leon
If you are not familiar with up and coming Toronto artist Dante Leon, now is the time to do so. From attending arts school from the age of 8, as well as having a recognized reggae musician as a father, music has always been a central focal point in Dante’s life. While still in high school in Toronto, Dante quickly established himself in the growing music scene that is now generating some of the top artists, producers and songwriters in the world. As with many young artists, early fame can be detrimental; Dante was able to navigate past the potential pitfalls and continue to grow and expand his talents, leading him to eventually move to LA in the summer of 2013.
Once in LA, Dante slightly shifted focus and began exploring his talents as a songwriter and producer. He’s worked with artists such as Cody Simpson and primarily with the electronic music duo DVBBS. These relationships in turn opened many doors for Dante, including recent collaborations with Post Malone, Roy Woods, and Oliver Heldens among others. While Dante continues to lend his songwriting and production services to many renowned artists, the 24 year old creator has simultaneously been able to master a sound not yet tamed by any other young artists in the industry today.
After the release of his debut reggae-infused single “Follow Me” and a feature on Ebro Beats1, Dante Leon is back with a new heartbreak single appropriately named “Desperately”. The single was initially written for a major artist placement, but Dante considered it too personal to give away.
Dante has a beautiful tone thats has a slight grit to it but is overwhelmingly soothing. His voice is full of sweetness, passion, and emotion all at once. The ballad finds him reminiscing of lost love, making us all wonder the identity of the belle that caused Dante to shed “thug tears”. The guitar led beat pairs well with Dante’s heartfelt lyrics. One thing that catches my attention is an artist’s ability to make you feel different emotions through their art. I can’t speak for everyone, but “Desperately” took me to a place of love, yearning, and heartbreak. For those desperately waiting more from Leon, this single is the first of many leading up to his debut EP. For now, let the new single sink in and stayed tuned for more.
