Introducing Thelma Plum to The A&R Report! It feels like Thelma Plum has been around forever, so you can imagine my surprise to find out she’s only 19 years old. Her recently released EP Monsters shows a change in direction for Plum, who joined forces with legendary hip hop producer M-Phazes (Kimbra, Eminem) to create an ethereal EP.
Her debut EP “Rosie” received plenty of attention and saw her embark on a sold out Australian Tour bringing her unique storytelling to life. She returned to the studio with a new musical direction introducing synths and a string section to her intimate thoughts. The finished product is hauntingly beautiful and will have you captivated from start to finish. Opening with title track “Monsters” the new musical direction is quickly introduced with strong harmonies and lingering lyrics like “Monsters, them monsters they fuck with my head” cemented in your head. “Young In Love” carries on the minimalistic sound with simple beats and strings that impresses with her vocal range and maturity. With its infectious hook and folky roots “How Much Does Your Love Cost” is the most upbeat song on “Monsters” and not surprisingly the lead single for this release. It gives the EP the perfect amount of variety proving that her previous sound is not completely abandoned and is this experimentation is allowing her to grow as an artist. Closing with “Candle” this brutally honest song could easily fit on a Lana Del Rey album. With haunting vocals and upfront lyrics like “I never hated myself more than yesterday” I can’t help but think this could be one of Plum’s rawest tracks yet. She is definitely one of Australia’s hidden gems but she won’t be for long, so what are you waiting for? Listen to her new music NOW!
