I like to think of Johnny Stimson as the “funkiest white boy that you might actually have heard of.” If you are like a lot of people who watch Vampire Diaries or Trophy Wife…or are one of the people who caught his sold out show at the Brooklyn Bowl, then count yourself among the fortunate who have come across this Dallas-based songster. Channeling the stylings of Marvin Gaye and Daft Punk, while sprinkling a little Beatles along the way, Johnny’s records are infectious. They also come with an incredible sonic polish that literally leaps out of your headphones and makes it hard to believe that it’s coming from and independent project (for now). Secret Road (Ingrid Michaelson, Smashing Pumpkins) has come on board to handle licensing duties and is getting solid results, so staying independent has had its benefits. Stimson, along with fellow buzzing artist Sturgill Simpson, is currently on the Communion Club Nights Tour, which is the brain child of Mumford and Sons’ Ben Lovett. You can add multiple SXSW showcases and an appearance at House of Blues LA to his list of high profile shows as well. It appears that Johnny is pressing all the right buttons and getting all the right breaks. It’s just a matter of time before we are ALL quite familiar with him.
