Artist: Jessie Reyez
Origin: Toronto, CA
At first listen, Reyez’s voice catches you off guard as you get used to the unique, yet familiar voice. I immediately felt comfortable with the 50’s doo wop style ballad as it reminded me of the same sound that Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain” was inspired by. The best way to describe Reyez’s sound would be a mixture of Sia’s raspy soprano, with Gwen Stefani’s cool & curious delivery, and Nelly Furtado’s candid storytelling. Her delivery makes it obvious her lyrics are from a real place.
Reyez’s single “Figures” displays her balance of passion and nonchalant attitude through her simple lyrics that hit home because we’ve all been there. In her visual for the single, she displays the highs and lows of her story through an introduction smashing a guitar, lighting effects, solid yet vulnerable body language, and her pleading Bruno Mars method of delivery all while sporting a careless, frank appearance to match the mood of the lyrics. Reyez definitely commits to the message of the song, and the simple aesthetics of the visual from beginning to end.
Figures… I gave you ride or die, and you gave me games…
