Phoenix concert theatre is somewhat of a legendary performance spot in Toronto. Some of the best performers in the world graced this stage at some point in their career. To support her third studio album, “Reality Show,” Jazmine Sullivan has had major success selling out dates in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Silver Springs, Maryland. Toronto was no different, anticipation was building for Jazmine to get on stage with chants of “Jaz-mine” echoing throughout the venue before the curtain finally Revealed the R&B songstress.
Phoenix concert Theatre was filled to capacity. There’s no need for the stage theatrics with Sullivan. Her pitch perfect voice was enough to keep the eager audience singing and mesmerized as Sullivan belts out hits from her first two albums, “Fearless” and “Love Me Back” and her recent chart-topping album “R&B Reality Show.”
Jazmine Sullivan opened the show with uptempo Meek Mill-featuring banger “Dumb,” off the new album, and the midtempo Latin-infused hip-hop groove “Bust Your Windows” from Fearless…then brought everyone in attendance back in time slowing things down with her Grammy-nominated slow jam “Lions, Tigers & Bears”. Despite being away for so long, her ability to connect with the crowd was polished. If you were an emerging artist in the building that night you witnessed the blueprint, notes should have been taken.
“I want to be honest,” Sullivan told the crowd. “I was so nervous about coming back. I didn’t know if you guys were still going to be here to support me.” The support was never in doubt.
To end a spectacular night Jazmine Sullivan’s Close out track was the hit “I need you bad” an amazing way to send cap off a great show and leave a memorable impression. Energy was crazy for the entire show.
